The
region of "Campo de Borja" has a very continental climate, with
influence of the atlantic climate in winter, specially of the NW Wind.
This wind is called "Cierzo", it is very cold and dry, and with
a mediterranean influence in Summer. These special characteristics of the climate give special features to the wine, very different from the wines of other areas that produce wine. The thermic contrasts between day and night, and among the seasons are vast, with extreme temperatures. The rainfall is rare, with an average that varies between 350mm in the low areas and reaching to about 450mm in higher areas. "Campo de Borja" belongs to Somontano Iberico, as a zone structurated around the Huecha Valley. The orography is part of a series of high plateaux ranging between 350 and 700m., with a smooth topography with wide wavy curvature. The west part appears to have more topographic features due to the foothills of the Moncayo Massif., which has a considerable influence on the climate of the area, giving specific characteristics to the wines. One of the features that is currently more effective when introducing the area and which helps to a better vinyeard cultivation is the study of the soils. The soil that prevaiis in the D.Q. is limy-brownish and terrace, and medium stony soil, good drainage, fair levels of organic materials and rich in nutrients. It also includes ferrous-clayey soil to the sides nearest to Moncayo, where it is of a more stony surface. This soil is much favorable for vineyeard cultivation, obtaining quality productions. |
